Mentoring Competency Assessment (MCA) Framework
The Mentoring Competency Assessment (MCA) is a nationally recognized, research-based tool that defines six essential competencies for effective mentoring. At the heart of the EngEx Mentor Network Program, the MCA framework helps mentors and mentees build strong, purposeful, and intentional mentoring relationships.
The six core competencies are:
- Maintaining Effective Communication
- Aligning Expectations
- Assessing Understanding
- Addressing Well-Being
- Promoting Professional Development
- Fostering Independece
We use the MCA Framework to shape our workshops, guide self-assessments, and structure feedback conversations. Both mentors and mentees use this shared framework to:
- Set personal and professional development goals
- Reflect on progress and challenges
- Deepen their mentoring skills over time
By grounding the EngEx Mentor Network Program in the MCA Framework, we ensure that mentoring relationships are intentional, growth-oriented, and supportive of all identities and career stages.
