A shot of NC State's Belltower centered in front of a partly cloudy blue sky, with the Belltower partially obscured by green leafy trees and pink and white spring foliage. The shot is taken from underneath a brick awning, and one of the awning's brick columns dominates the frame to the right of the Belltower. A hanging lantern-style light can be seen near the center-top.

Bezos Center for Sustainable Protein at NC State

North Carolina State University was awarded $30 million over five years from the Bezos Earth Fund to lead a center of excellence to create a biomanufacturing hub for dietary proteins that are environmentally friendly, healthy, accessible and affordable.

The center will include numerous partners from academia and industry to research, create and commercialize new technologies for manufacturing various protein products.

Our undergrads traveled to the Dominican Republic to participate in an engineering study on water quality. ✈️🇩🇴💧

The College of Engineering, the Alternative Service Break Program at NC State and Servicio Para la Paz collaborated to create a comprehensive project that would analyze contamination and associated health risks in rainwater harvesting systems. These systems are a critical source of clean water for many communities, and therefore understanding potential contamination is critical for water safety and reliability.

The team measured 64 rainwater systems in three separate communities, testing components such as sediment filters, rainwater taps and other water sources the households relied on daily. Zinc tests investigated potential contamination from roofing materials. Aquagenx compartment field bag tests allowed them to measure E.coli concentration (the visible blue color) and total coliform concentration (fluorescent blue under UV light).

Water safety is integral to the health and well-being of any community. Through collaboration and thoughtfulness, steps can continuously be taken in the direction of water sustainability, long term access and reliable infrastructure.
