Applied AI in Engineering and Computer Science

Edgar Lobaton, Director of Applied AI

Edgar Lobaton serves as the College of Engineering’s director of Applied AI. He provides strategic leadership for NC State’s COE applied artificial intelligence initiatives, bridging academic research, engineering education and industry partnership.

Edgar joined the college in 2011 after completing a post doc at UNC-Chapel Hill. He was awarded the NSF CAREER Award in 2016 and received the University Faculty Scholars and the Outstanding Teacher Awards from NC State in 2024. His research focuses on the integration of AI, and physical and probabilistic modeling applied to cyber-physical systems in areas such as wearable health monitoring, rehabilitation robotics, agriculture and biological imaging.

Edgar has served as chair of the college’s Applied AI Advisory Committee since 2025 and has been a member of the committee since its inception in 2024.

Applied AI Advisory Committee

Nominated by their department heads, these faculty members who each bring their own expertise in AI, help inform and advise on the Applied AI initiative at the College of Engineering.  

The Advisory Committee is organized into the following working groups: 

  1. Strategic planning
  2. Research and new faculty hiring 
  3. Curriculum revision and expansion 
  4. Facilities and research infrastructure 
  5. Symposia and college-wide seminars
  6. External relations: philanthropic case building, corporate relations, reputation
