But what they didn’t know at the time is that they’d first be attending the College of Engineering at NC State together, earning degrees that helped them in unexpected ways in their entertainment careers.

The College of Engineering recently achieved top-10 status in research expenditures among colleges of engineering according to ASEE data. The research stories in the Fall/Winter 2018 NC State Engineering magazine illustrate the reason for this ranking, demonstrating the high caliber of our research and the faculty, staff and students conducting it. In this issue, we also highlight our Research Experiences for Teachers program, our Rural NC Internship Program, the progress of Fitts-Woolard Hall and the generosity of our alumni.

The beginning of fall semester is an exciting time, as we welcome our first-year students as well as our returning students and faculty. In addition to assisting our new students with their adjustment to the rigors of university classes and life away from home, one of our jobs is to introduce them to the many opportunities the College provides to enhance their education beyond their classroom experiences.

Madison Maloney is a senior aerospace engineering major from Greenville, NC, and a 2018 Goldwater Scholar. Chosen twice as an Astronaut Scholar, Maloney is pursuing her passion for space exploration and hopes to follow in the footsteps of a fellow female NC State engineer with her eyes on the stars.
