Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) Crescendo Event

The Crescendo of EML offers faculty on our campus the opportunity to engage in workshops focused on Entrepreneurially Minded Learning (EML). These modular sessions, made possible by The Kern Family Foundation, explore the impact of EML on student engagement and learning outcomes, providing practical strategies that can be applied across disciplines. With topics tailored to a variety of interests, faculty are invited to participate based on availability and can mix and match sessions to suit their needs. Led by Kern Family Foundation Program Director Ranen McLanahan, these workshops are designed to be interactive.

How to Write a Hook Statement

Join Dr. Kirsti Cole and Dr. Roy Schwartzman from the Campus and Writing Speaking Program (CWSP) of the Office for Faculty Excellence for a dynamic Lunch and Learn session on crafting an impactful hook statement for your entrepreneurial mindset class project. A strong hook grabs attention, sparks curiosity, and sets the stage for innovative thinking. Dr. Cole and Dr. Schwartzman will share strategies for writing compelling openings that connect with your audience and introduce key entrepreneurial concepts such as creativity, problem-solving, and resilience. Whether you’re presenting a project or starting a class discussion, you’ll leave with practical tips to make your message stand out.

[VIRTUAL] CARE Coalition I – A Call to Action: Forum for STEM Leaders to Reform the Norms for Academic Caregivers

In collaboration with the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and the Women in Engineering ProActive Network, this hybrid forum is designed for leaders in science and engineering to take decisive steps toward reforming support for caregiving faculty. Building on the National Academies’ 2024 report, Supporting Family Caregivers in STEMM: A Call to Action, we will explore innovative approaches to create more inclusive academic environments.
Outcomes:
- Evaluate the challenges academic caregivers face in STEMM fields and the importance of supporting them.
- Identify key recommendations and best practices that can be implemented in their departments, colleges, and campus-wide.
- Brainstorm ideas and co-develop innovative approaches to support STEMM caregivers.

NC State Story Lab

StoryReady Founder Janece Shaffer will lead an impactful, in-person storytelling workshop for 25 NC State College of Engineering members. Sponsored by KEEN and part of the Wolfpack Engineering Unleashed initiative, this interactive experience will help participants develop storytelling skills to enhance their communication, whether for writing grants, crafting research statements for promotion and tenure, or enriching course content. Through engaging exercises, group collaboration, and personalized coaching, you will learn to create compelling narratives directly relevant to your work, allowing you to communicate your ideas more effectively.
Outcomes:
- Develop storytelling techniques for use in grants, research, and teaching.
- Create a personal narrative that is relevant to your work and leadership.
- Reflect on and refine your storytelling approach through constructive feedback.
- Evaluate and strengthen your stories for greater clarity and impact.
- Apply storytelling strategies to enhance how you communicate your work to diverse audiences.

CARE Coalition Part II – Visionary Initiatives

This interactive workshop focuses on strategic leadership for advancing academic change, particularly in supporting STEM caregivers within higher education. Through a series of presentations, activities, and collaborative discussions, participants will explore key issues such as caregiving’s impact on work-life balance and strategies for creating supportive environments in academic settings.
Outcomes
- Create a shared vision for the CARE Coalition that demonstrates leadership in shaping its goals for STEM caregiver support.
- Analyze caregiving challenges and use skills to identify opportunities for impactful initiatives.
- Design micro-initiatives that apply principles to drive academic change and support STEM caregivers.

Integrating AI in Teaching Writing: A Workshop for Engineering Faculty (September 27, 2024)
In this recorded session, Kirsti Cole, PhD, Co-Director of the NC State Office for Faculty Excellence’s Campus Writing and Speaking Program, led a workshop on integrating AI tools into writing instruction for engineering students. The workshop covered the following topics:
- Introduction to AI in Writing for Engineering
- Ethical Considerations in Engineering Contexts
- Hands-On Activities Exploring AI Tools for Writing
- Designing AI-Enhanced and AI-Driven Writing Assignments
- Assessing AI’s Impact on Engineering Writing Skills
Participants learned to implement AI tools to enhance student writing, address ethical concerns, assess AI’s effectiveness, and design AI-supported activities.
