In our labs

It’s a sound that may be familiar to students attending class in Engineering Building III (EB III) on NC State’s Centennial Campus — a roar that’s reminiscent of a commercial jet preparing for takeoff. In reality, it is the sound of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering’s supersonic wind tunnel, located in an annex building on the back side of EB III. The building is also home to a closed-loop subsonic wind tunnel operated by the department.

Rabiei, Williams receive 2019 Alcoa Foundation Awards

The 2019 Alcoa Foundation Engineering Research Awards were presented to Dr. Afsaneh Rabiei, professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Dr. Cranos Williams, associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), at the spring faculty meeting of the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University.

Fish-inspired material changes color using nanocolumns

Inspired by the flashing colors of the neon tetra fish, researchers have developed a technique for changing the color of a material by manipulating the orientation of nanostructured columns in the material.
