Chancellor’s Innovation Fund Backs Six Budding Inventions

This year’s CIF awardees are exploring how to ensure endpoint cybersecurity in the era of quantum computing; make veterinary eye surgeries safer; replace plastic foam with a biodegradable alternative; help farmers grow more crops with less fertilizer; and enhance a cutting-edge gene-editing technique that uses electrical pulses to deliver DNA into cells.

Forest Biomaterials Professor Nathalie Lavoine Wins NSF CAREER Award

Lavoine will use the five-year, nearly $750,000 grant to advance her research on cellulose nanocrystals for the creation of sustainable colors and materials for various products.

Libraries Scholarship Fund supports Brianna Bui’s passion for engineering

Bui, a junior majoring in paper science and engineering and chemical engineering at the College of Natural Resources, was recently named one of 10 students to receive a scholarship through the Libraries Student Scholarship Fund.

Jingxin Wang named head of Department of Forest Biomaterials

Wang joins the College of Natural Resources from West Virginia University. He brings more than 15 years of leadership experience and expertise in forestry and natural resources, sustainable biomaterials and bioenergy.

Fertilizer of the future

An interdisciplinary team led by Katharina Stapelmann is setting out on an ambitious three-year project to completely rethink how nitrogen-based fertilizers are produced and used. From on-farm fertilizer production to on-demand, precision irrigation, their project aims to cut energy use, protect the water supply and increase yields.
