DOE grant brings renewed energy to NC State COE in more ways than one

Nothing energizes the engineering community like fusion. Scientists have seen fusion startups crop up around the country in recent years as fusion becomes less of an experimental, fundamental science program and more of an energy program.

The new dean

Pfaendtner comes to NC State University from the University of Washington (UW), where he served most recently as chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering (CHE) and the Steven R. and Connie R. Rogel Endowed Professor. He succeeds Louis Martin-Vega, who led the College for 17 years before stepping down as dean in summer 2023.

Faculty highlights

The latest awards and honors earned by faculty of the College. 

Dr. Detlef Knappe works with graduate and post doc students in his lab on Centennial campus. Dr. Knappe is interested in drinking water quality and treatment, water reuse, organic micropollutants, development of water treatment processes for polar and persistent organic pollutants, and the fate of organic pollutants in solid waste landfills.

NC State researchers study enhanced water treatment methods to remove PFAS

More than seven years after the discovery of elevated levels of harmful chemicals in the Cape Fear River that provides drinking water for 1.5 million people, NC State University researchers who brought awareness to this public health issue are continuing to pursue a broad range of research initiatives with the goal of ensuring a cleaner environment and safer drinking water.

MAE postdoc wins first-place prize in annual research image contest

Shuang Wu, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), won a first-place prize in the graphics and data visualization category of NC State’s annual Envisioning Research contest. His illustration, “Caterpillar Inspired Soft Crawling Robot,” depicts a caterpillar-like soft robot that can move forward, backward and dip under narrow spaces. It was…

Fulbright scholars head to Rwanda

The Fulbright program provides approximately 8,000 scholarships annually for graduate study, to conduct research or to teach English abroad. This year, 11 NC State students were awarded 2023 Fulbright Scholarships, a new record. 

Students from PItt county visited Centennial Campus for an engineering computer science camp that dealt with AI and robotics. Students coded movement of a small, spherical robot around an obstical course.

K-12 students from eastern NC explore AI in new camp

The NSF has emphasized a need for more K-12 learning experiences with AI. Through a grant, which runs from 2022-25, NC State researchers will engage with more than 500 students and 20 teachers.

Maya Clinton is the first Black woman to graduate from her program, but not the last

Clinton graduated from NC State in May 2023 with a dual degree from both universities in physics and mechanical engineering. During her time at NC State, she was an engineering ambassador and did undergraduate research.
