For the first time, the College of Engineering combined its Awards for Excellence ceremony with its faculty awards, which were previously given at the annual faculty meeting.

This year, the college recognized:

  • 18 staff members who were nominated for an Awards for Excellence, and four staff members who won the award
  • 18 faculty members who have won awards at the college, university or national level
  • 12 staff members who have been named Pride of the Wolfpack winners in the last year

Awards for Excellence

The college’s Awards for Excellence are part of the broader university and State of North Carolina Awards for Excellence. The award is the most prestigious honor bestowed upon non-faculty employees and recognizes recipients in the following categories: Customer Service, Efficiency and Innovation, Safety and Heroism, Human Relations, Outstanding State Government Service, Public Service, and Spirit of North Carolina.

Supported by the NC State Alumni Association, this is one of the most prestigious awards given on campus to recognize excellence in undergraduate education.

Casey Dietrich, Professor, Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

Dietrich’s teaching philosophy is based on learning by doing, and he encourages active, team-based learning in his classrooms. Since starting at NC State in 2013, he has created curriculum and hired two faculty members to create the coastal engineering program. He works hard to create collaborative teaching and research environments, and he always prioritizes the interests and wellbeing of his students.

Outstanding Teacher Award

Given by the College of Engineering, this award recognizes excellence in teaching at all levels and is a prerequisite for being considered for the Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Alumni Distinguished Professor Award. Recipients are members of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers for as long as they are NC State faculty members.

  • Douglas Call, Associate Professor, Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

Call’s philosophy is that teaching is a two-way street. He encourages active dialogue in his classroom and engages with students throughout lectures, as well as incorporates relevant events and news into practice problems and assessments.

  • Jason King, Associate Teaching Professor, Department of Computer Science

King’s teaching philosophy is rooted in the use of technology; holding students to high standards while being sensitive to different learning needs; and dedicated time to reflect on his own improvements as a teacher. Read more.

  • Steven Welton, Teaching Professor, Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering

Through his professional experience and time teaching, Welton has found that an approach that balances theory and problem-solving, individual work and group work, and more, is the most effective way to teach and engage students.
