North Carolina Space Grant has opened its signature funding opportunities, the Graduate Research Fellowship and the Undergraduate Research Scholarship, for applications for the 2024-25 academic year.

Graduate Research Fellowship

The Graduate Research Fellowships is a competitive award geared towards outstanding graduate students pursuing research and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The fellowship program provides support for graduate students to supplement and enhance basic and applied research that supports NASA’s Mission Directorates

The defined research activity must be supervised by a faculty mentor and may be conducted virtually, on the home campus, or at an industrial or government facility. Selected fellows will conduct research over the course of a 12-month period, beginning June 1, 2024 and ending May 31, 2025.

Deadlines

  • Graduate students must submit their applications for review by 5 p.m. ET on Friday, March 15, 2024. 
  • Faculty members must submit their letters of recommendation by 5 p.m. ET on Monday, March 18, 2024.

Undergraduate Research Scholarship

The Undergraduate Research Scholarship engages and prepares the future STEM workforce. This program provides support for basic and applied research that has NASA applications. Recipients are also afforded opportunities to cultivate relationships with peers, faculty and the NASA community. 

Selected Undergraduate Research Scholars undertake a defined research activity supervised by a faculty member over a 12-month period, beginning June 1, 2024 and ending no later than May 31, 2025. Research can take place on the home campus or at an industrial or government facility.

Undergraduate and graduate students can learn more about funding requirements and the application process at three virtual information sessions. Registration is required but free. Students may register up to the time of the event. A session will be recorded and posted online at a later date.
