Westmoreland receives the 2023 F. J. and Dorothy Van Antwerpen Award for Service to AIChE

Professor Phil Westmoreland has received the 2023 F. J. and Dorothy Van Antwerpen Award for Service to the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). The award, “Recognizes a chemical engineer for outstanding contributions and service to the Institute. The award is presented to a member of AIChE who has made outstanding contributions to the chemical engineering profession via service to the Institute. These contributions should emphasize achievements in both the professional and technical areas of Institute activities. The recipient will have contributed to innovative approaches to meet both perceived and unperceived membership needs.”
An alum of the department, Prof. Westmoreland (B.S. ’73) is well known for his wide range of active service and achievements within the chemical engineering community. His contributions to the AIChE include serving as the 2013 Institute President, and he is the founding Chair of the AIChE Computational Molecular Science and Engineering Forum. His other service to the Institute includes serving as a member of the Institute’s board of directors (2009-11) and he is an Institute Fellow.
Outside of the Institute, Phil’s professional activities have included serving as a trustee of the educational nonprofit CACHE Corporation (having served as its president in 2004-06), serving as board members of the Combustion Institute (2002-2014) and the Council for Chemical Research (2005-07), and he is a Fellow of the Combustion Institute.
Phil’s professional honors and awards include the AIChE Institute Award for Excellence in Industrial Gases Technology, the Director’s Award for Collaborative Integration from the National Science Foundation, the David A. Shirley Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the William H. Corcoran Award from the American Society for Engineering Education and he received an Outstanding Senior Faculty Award from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst College of Engineering. At NCSU, he was elected to the NCSU Research Leadership Academy and he is a recipient of the Outstanding Research Award from the NCSU Alumni Association.
