Ivanov appointed Distinguished Professor of Nuclear Engineering
Department of Nuclear Engineering
Congratulations to Dr. Kostadin Ivanov, department head and professor for NC State’s Department of Nuclear Engineering. He has been appointed distinguished professor by Chancellor Woodson for his accomplishments well above the criteria for full professor and being one of the best scholars in the discipline. He has improved the quality of NC State University’s mission through service and involvement in the campus community.
Dr. Ivanov is a member of the Nuclear Science Committee (NSC) of the Organization of Economic, Cooperation and Development (OECD) Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), chair of the Working Party on Innovative Issues of Reactor Systems (WPRS) at NEA, member of Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA) Board of Managers, member of the Science and Technology (S&T) Committee of Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and a member of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) Advisory Board. He is an American Nuclear Society Fellow, and former chair for the Nuclear Engineering Department Head Organization (NEDHO). Ivanov is an American Nuclear Society (ANS) Fellow. He received the highest award Bulgarian Academy of Sciences’ Marin Drinov Honorary Medal.
His research area includes next generation stochastic and deterministic methods in reactor physics analysis and nuclear cross-section generation and modeling. Ivanov also develops advanced methods for multi-physics coupling for design and safety applications, as well as verification and validation methods, uncertainty quantification and propagation in modeling and simulations.
Dr. Ivanov earned his BS in nuclear engineering from the Moscow Institute of Power Engineering, Russia. He received his PhD in reactor physics from the Institute of Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy (INRNE), Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He was senior research scientist at INRNE and assistant professor at the Technical University of Sofia, Bulgaria. He later was a visiting Fulbright scholar Pennsylvania State University (PSU) Department of Nuclear Engineering, and visiting scientist at the Research Center Rossendorf Inc., Germany. Prior to joining the NC State faculty, he was a distinguished professor of nuclear engineering and graduate coordinator of nuclear engineering program at PSU.
