NC State helps sponsor USA Science and Engineering Festival

North Carolina State University is among the organizations sponsoring the 2nd USA Science and Engineering Festival to be held in Washington, DC, in April.

Dr. Laura Bottomley, Lindsey Smith Genut and Susan D’Amico of the Engineering Place outreach program at NC State will lead a team of faculty, students, K-12 teachers and corporate partners bringing hands-on engineering activities to the festival. NC State is a Titanium sponsor for the event.

Elizabeth Parry, coordinator for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) partnership development at the Engineering Place, is also participating in festival activities as a “Nifty Fifty” speaker. The “Nifty Fifty” is a group of 100 noted science and engineering professionals who are spreading out across the Washington, DC, area during the 2011-2012 school year to speak about their work and careers at various middle and high schools.

The festival is the nation’s largest science and engineering celebration. It will feature more than 3,000 interactive activities and 150 stage shows. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the engineering of baseball bats and balls and the chemistry of Thanksgiving dinner, among other activities.

The festival will also welcome science celebrities such Bill Nye the Science Guy and the casts of Mythbusters, The Big Bang Theory and NCIS.
