Chemical engineering students, student chapter receive national AIChE awards

Nine chemical and biomolecular engineering undergraduates at North Carolina State University received national awards at the 2011 American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) annual meeting. And for the 14th time in 16 years, NC State’s student chapter won Outstanding Student Chapter Award from AIChE.

Evan Piephoff and Megan Smithmyer collected first place awards in the research poster competition. Second place winners were Dayne Plemmons and Andrew Tibbets, and third place winners were Jen Lewis and Shu Zhu.

In addition, Jordan Keith received an Othmer National Scholarship Award for his “excellent academic record, enthusiastic involvement in AIChE activities, and thoughtful chemical engineering career plans.”

Brian Schuster won an Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award for attaining the highest scholastic grade-point average in the chapter during his freshman and sophomore years. And Julie Boyles won a Freshman Recognition Award for being the most active in the chapter during her freshman year.

The NC State student chapter won an Outstanding Student Chapter Award for the 2010/2011 year “in recognition of the membership and participation of the students and faculty, the quality and quantity of meetings and activities, and the chapter’s involvement in local, regional and national events”. The NC State chapter was one of 16 recognized nationally with the award.
