Narayan recognized with Acta Materialia Gold Medal and Prize
The Acta Materialia Board of Governors has selected Dr. Jagdish “Jay” Narayan, the John C.C. Fan Family Distinguished Professor in Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University, to receive its 2011 Acta Materialia Gold Medal and Prize.
The award honors one person annually for accomplishments in leadership and materials science research worldwide. Acta Materialia, Inc. represents 33 professional societies worldwide in publishing two highly regarded international journals.
Narayan’s research has proven pivotal to the understanding of basic phenomena in metals, ceramics and electronic materials and processing. His work includes seminal contributions in laser processing, semiconductor alloys and many other areas.
The many honors for Narayan include being named one of the Materials Research Society’s 34 inaugural Fellows, and he is a life member and Fellow of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, an honor limited to 100 living members. Narayan is also a life member and Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences in India, an honor limited to 100 foreign members, and has received a Gold Medal from ASM International, the world’s largest materials science and engineering society.
Narayan received his master’s degree in 1970 and his doctoral degree in 1971 from the University of California, Berkeley, and his bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1969, Kanpur, India, all in materials science and engineering.
He joined the faculty at NC State in 1983.
