A team of about 40 faculty and staff from the College of Engineering won first place overall at North Carolina State University’s 10th Annual Fun Run and Fitness Walk on Friday.

The engineering team won after reciting an energetic chant (see video at left) before a panel of judges that included Dr. Louis Martin-Vega, dean of the College of Engineering. Team members walked one mile or ran two miles around NC State’s Lee Field during the fitness-focused event.

The team was named the Engineering Grand Challengers, a nod to the National Academy of Engineering’s 14 Grand Challenges for the field in the 21st Century. Examples include making solar energy economical, engineering better medicines and making clean water available to everyone.

Other prizes were awarded for most creative team name, most creative costumes, most boisterous team and most spirit. Helping Hand Mission was at the event to collect canned goods and clothing for the needy.

The event was organized by NC State Human Resources.
