College of Engineering students place at Annual Graduate Research Symposium

Four graduate students in the College of Engineering and the affiliated Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State University were recognized as best presenters at the University’s 13th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium on March 21.

Of the 24 recognized presenters from each discipline, the four engineering graduate student winners are:

Discipline: Engineering
First place | Lokesh Karthik Narayanan
Degree program: Industrial and Systems Engineering
Project title: “Non-Destructive Quality Assessment of 3D Bioprinted Constructs via Dielectric Impedance Spectroscopy”
Advisors: Dr. Rohan Shirwaiker*

Second place | Anurodh Tripathi
Degree program: Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
Project title: “Recipe to synthesize aerogels with tunable properties: from design principles to application”
Advisors: Dr. Saad A. Khan and Dr. Orlando J. Rojas

Third place | Parth Chansoria
Degree Program: Industrial and Systems Engineering
Project title: “Ultrasound-Assisted Manipulation of Micro-particles in Fluid Matrix to Create Highly Aligned Constructs”
Advisor: Dr. Rohan A. Shirwaiker*

Discipline: Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
Second place | Lise Montefiore
Degree program: Biological and Agricultural Engineering
Project title: “Coupling climate, land use, and sea level rise projections to identify threatened estuaries in North Carolina”
Advisor: Dr. Natalie G. Nelson

The research symposium is presented by the Graduate School and the Graduate Student Association and had more than 200 NC State graduate students presenting this year in eight categories.

Judges evaluated students on the quality of their research, quality of information on the poster, oral communication about the poster and creativity and aesthetic qualities of the poster. All winners received a plaque and cash prize. First place winners receive $350; second place, $200; and third place, $100.

*Both Lokesh Karthik Narayanan and Parth Chansoria’s research was supported by National Science Foundation (NSF) grants. Chansoria’s was supported by Dr. Rohan A. Shirwaiker’s NSF CAREER Award grant.
