Hassan Gift Accelerates Hypersonics Research

Basil Hassan elevated his family’s long-held ties to NC State University’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) with a naming gift for the high-speed wind tunnel laboratory located in MAE West

The newly named Hassan Lab was officially dedicated on April 23, 2026, recognizing the significant support and resources Hassan’s gift will provide faculty and students who are innovating in a rapidly advancing field. The Hassan Lab is home to the department’s advanced high-speed flow research facilities, including a supersonic wind tunnel and the longest-duration hypersonic wind tunnel in the Southeast.

“The work performed in this lab will allow researchers to better understand the complex flow physics that exist in hypersonic flows,” Hassan said. “This understanding is critical to the development of state-of-the-art computational software and validation of the physical models that will allow us to better analyze and design more capable hypersonic reentry vehicles, much like the Artemis II capsule, which returned College of Engineering grad Christina Koch and her fellow astronauts back to Earth in April.”

A three-time alumnus of NC State University, Hassan earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D in aerospace engineering. His father, Hassan A. Hassan, was a professor at NC State for 56 years and helped create the aerospace program in the 1960s. The Hassan family has established scholarships and a distinguished lecture series, as well as contributed to other philanthropic endeavors.

Over a 33-year career, Hassan has led advancements in science and technology capabilities in support of Sandia National Laboratories’ national security mission. He is the current director of Sandia’s Engineering Sciences Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Hassan is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and served as the institute’s president from 2020-22. He is a 2008 recipient of AIAA’s Sustained Service Award and was recently recognized with the 2025 AIAA Distinguished Service Award.

Like his father, he also has a long history of service to NC State University. Hassan currently serves on the NC State Engineering Foundation Board of Directors and on the university’s Board of Visitors. He is a 2017 recipient of NC State’s Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award. Just prior to the naming ceremony, Hassan was elected as the new vice chair for the NC State Engineering Foundation Board of Directors. He will become the chair in July 2027.  

“NC State’s MAE department provided me with the educational foundation to have an outstanding career as an aerospace professional and leader,” he said. “This gift, which will support student design competitions, AIAA student conference attendance and aspects of hypersonics research, as well as my service on the Foundation board, demonstrates my thanks to NC State and my commitment to giving back and providing that same foundation to future aerospace alums.”
