Verbal, Distinguished Alumnus and NC State trailblazer, dies at 79

Claude A. Verbal, Sr., the third African-American to graduate from North Carolina State University and a Distinguished Alumnus of its Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, passed away on Feb. 2, 2022, at his home in Arizona. He was 79.

Department of Defense awards grant to MAE professor for new hypersonic research facility

The DoD will fund $775K to build a novel Mach 6 wind tunnel facility that is uniquely designed to make scientific breakthroughs in critical hypersonic technologies at the intersection of aerothermodynamics, high-speed propulsion, materials science, structural dynamics, and more. The DURIP award is further augmented by contributions from the College of Engineering and MAE Department that provide the necessary infrastructure and personnel.

MAE team selected for $3.2 million energy-harvesting underwater vehicle project

North Carolina State University’s Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department was recently selected as part of a multi-institutional team that will be participating in Phase 2 of DARPA’s Manta Ray program.

Goodnight Scholar Spotlight: Kerrington Shade

Amid her many accomplishments at NC State, Kerrington Shade '21 holds "overcoming the challenges of and uncertainties of switching [majors] to an unfamiliar field of study" among the highest. Originally an Applied Mathematics major, Kerrington switched into the Mechanical Engineering program with the goal of working on real-world applications through the mathematical lenses that she has grown to appreciate.

Kirigami robotic grippers are delicate enough to lift egg yolks

Engineering researchers from North Carolina State University have demonstrated a new type of flexible, robotic grippers that are able to lift delicate egg yolks without breaking them, and that are precise enough to lift a human hair. The work has applications for both soft robotics and biomedical technologies.
