North Carolina State University’s College of Engineering is partnering on a new community project to advance artificial intelligence systems and safety.

AI governance policies are often complex and disparate. Teams creating and deploying AI systems need to meet both corporate and governmental regulations. Led by Red Hat, asago (AI Safety And Governance Orchestration), aims to create an automated, traceable workflow that translates these — sometimes abstract — policy guidelines into safer, production-ready AI systems.

“Red Hat’s collaboration with NC State University’s College of Engineering reflects our shared priority to accelerate immediate innovation in AI safety and security, which will benefit all organizations integrating AI systems into their workflows,” said Edgar Lobaton, director of applied AI for the College of Engineering. “We are tremendously grateful to Red Hat for this investment and are eager to share the discoveries and methodologies generated from this partnership in open-source forums.”

The asago project brings AI experts together from higher education, industry, research, government and more. NC State’s involvement is a testament to the university’s and the College of Engineering’s thought leadership in the rapidly growing and changing field of artificial intelligence.

A particular focus of the college is the safe and responsible deployment of AI systems. By working with government, regulators, businesses and more, artificial intelligence can be shaped into a tool that benefits and aids people, both close to home in North Carolina and across the world.
